It has not all turned out as badly as it might have after one week. The game park honored their original offer, and the grocery store has not raised the price on anything yet. Restaurants and gas have become more expensive, but more 25% increases than 50%, making a gallon of gas about $7 and a mocha $3.80, if one indulges in such things. An avocado and a lime still costs $.30, though, if one indulges in guacamole.
We had a lovely overnight visit to the second-best game park in the country. Malawi had huge poaching problems from about the 1950s to the 1990s, so they don't have great wildlife here relative to the surrounding countries. Still, it's not nothing to see warthogs, six kinds of antelope, elephants 50 feet from your tent eating marula fruit, a cape buffalo, hippo, a croc, and two kinds of monkeys. Malawians certainly have something to be proud of, and we noticed that they were.
