I now write from Manila, Philippines. It took me a long time to stop spelling it "Philippians."
My sister Abby and her husband Ben are living in Manila this year. He grew up here and it's fun to see him in his element. It also helps me understand why he likes rice so much.
They have a rabbit, Alice. I think they were envious of my cat, but thought with a rabbit, you can at least eat it at the end of the year.
Just kidding. They got a 1st grade teacher to say she'll take it in the fall.
This week, Abby has to work and Ben's started a diploma/Master's program in photography, so I'm batching it at home all day. Part of me wants to know the country, meet the warm people, understand the history and heartbreaks, see a regular market street on a sweaty evening, eat the local food.
But the other, and I must confess, prevailing part is happy to sleep in, meet Abby for lunch at one of the five local malls (Ben pointed out these are not in proportion to, say, parks), get $8/hr massages, use internet, enjoy Abby's comfy/cozy/clean home, and go out for dinner with the very cool expat friends they have.
