A. Rochester, Minnesota. cont.
B. Madison, Wisconsin. My hosts were Maria and Andres, the best friend and her boyfriend of my college roommate, Vicky. From Nicaragua and Colombia, resp. They were very kind to take me around despite their work schedules. Madison is a beautiful city and perhaps the only place in the US where people have Nader '04 bumper stickers. C. Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Home of Maggie & Daddo, my mother, Lynn's parents. Story of the picture: Maggie (real name, Barbara) was doing an estate sale in Boston and found this picture which bears an uncanny resemblance to Lynn, who was adopted. My mother is Armenian and the costume and tambourine are both consistent with that culture. A man at the sale saw the picture and tried to buy it/take it away from Maggie saying "this is not your daughter, this woman is Armenian" tearing it at the top. When Maggie took it to be framed the name of the artist was accidentally cut off.
E. Palos Heights, Illinois. I spent a night with Abby in a dorm south of Chicago where she'd just finished a two week course in law and culture, and her history major.
F. Ripley and Westfield, New York. Homes of cousins (to each other) Rachael and Jeremy, friends from my Nantucket summer. This was the first day I realized that driving this much by oneself (it was a 470 mile day) is a bad idea, which results in bringing my B game, so to speak, by the time I actually arrive to the destination. But even if there wasn't much of me to enjoy, I enjoyed meeting Rachael's fiance, Karl, and exploring the Chautauqua Institute with Jeremy.
